Pollinators like bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and even bats play a hugely important role in food production. However, many pollinators are in decline due to loss of habitat, climate change, pesticides, invasive species, pathogens, and parasites.
Revelstoke Rotary Club has signed on to Rotary District 5060’s “Pollinator Highway” in a concerted effort to provide food for pollinators from BC to southern Washington state.
Where to plant: Full sun to partial shade.
When to plant: Aim to plant wildflower seeds between two weeks before and eight weeks after the typical last frost date in your area. Planting during a time when there’s still a slight chance of light frost may enhance seed germination. You can also sow wildflower seeds in the fall, although some seeds might be lost to water, birds, and animals. For optimal results with annual species, it’s best to sow directly in early spring.
How to plant: Seeds can be scattered by hand. Seeds must come into contact with the soil to germinate. Do not bury seeds more than 2-3 times their thickness.
Growing: Maintain a consistently moist environment in the seeded area to aid in seed germination and help young seedlings establish themselves. It’s important to manage weeds effectively. After the plants start growing, most mixes generally won’t need extra watering unless there’s an extended period of hot and dry conditions. Our mixes are designed to regrow for several years, though they will eventually thrive from re-seeding. By late summer, many plants in the mixes will develop seed heads, which can be collected and sown the next spring.
